Addressing Gun Violence in Cape Town with ShotSpotter

For law enforcement officials, effectively addressing gun violence in Cape Town remains a top priority. The second-largest city in South Africa with nearly 5 million residents, Cape Town employs ShotSpotter in several gang-affected areas to help save lives and enhance law enforcement’s ability to respond to, intercept, and prevent gun violence.

In Manenberg, a notoriously violent suburb in an area known as the Cape Flats, there were 138 shootings in January, and, unfortunately, February has been worse. The Metro Police, the Tactical Response Unit, the Gang and Drug Task Team, and members of the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) recently gathered in response to the ongoing shootings. Alderman JP Smith shared that gunshot detection technology has been helping  law enforcement officials quickly detect and respond to high volumes of gunfire.

Alderman JP Smith details how law enforcement is working together to address gun violence in Manenberg.

In addition to focusing on their gunfire response, law enforcement has been working hard to build trust with the community, communicating that they are willing to protect identities and pay rewards for any recovered firearms. As a result, over the past three years, law enforcement has taken over 189 firearms off the streets of Manenberg, some of which can be attributed to community tip-offs.

Across the City of Cape Town, police have taken 2,480 firearms off the streets over the last four years, a monumental achievement. Going forward, continuing to swiftly address gun violence with gunshot detection technology, leveraging CCTV and drone technology,  establishing ongoing rapport with the community, and investing in increased ballistics testing capability to improve firearm conviction rates will remain top priorities.

Addressing gun violence in Cape Town continues to remain a complex challenge that requires a multi-pronged approach. There are battles to fight, as the constant supply and availability of ammunition remains a critical issue that requires working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPs) to address. But in the meantime, leveraging technology like ShotSpotter remains a pivotal tool in law enforcement’s toolbox to effectively manage gunfire response in many of the gang-impacted suburbs across the city.
